I failed a health & safety course recently. One of the questions was… in the event of a fire, what steps would you take? Apparently, ‘Very Big Ones’ was the wrong answer.
It’s ok to make health & safety entertaining – in fact, it should be encouraged. That is certainly our philosophy at Manage Group - do the compliance stuff and make it fun.
Our experience is that a lot of businesses will be doing cool stuff in health & safety and not even realise it. They use different labels… for instance, when a builder does a quote, they will look at things that can be on-charged such as scaffolding or parameter fencing. Well, both things cover high risk areas (working at height and the public) which is very much a health & safety risk managing thing.
It really helps to create evidence of the good things you are doing. Sadly, we as Kiwi’s are not good at reporting the good stuff, we only report when something goes wrong. Yet, in health & safety, it is quite useful to report the good stuff as that gives you the evidence that is often needed when Worksafe comes knocking.
If you only ever capture the negative things than that doesn’t really show your business in a positive way does it?
We spend quite a bit of time with our clients in finding ways we can record the good stuff. We also find that most employers are quite relieved that they are doing a lot more in health & safety than they thought they were.
ACC provides subsidies for the construction and manufacturing sectors to get support in identifying risks and getting the right solutions in place. The level of the subsidy is dependent on your payroll however can be up to $2,400.
If you are curious please email / text / phone us as we are more than happy to check what subsidy you have available.
No obligation - it’s what we do for n3 and it’s members.
